Different from the natures of dry-zone in central Myanmar and
tropical monsoon of lower Myanmar, the entire Shan State,
geographically the eastern plateau and of the largest size in area
among the 14 States and Divisions of Myanmar, is fallen in the
temperate zone resulting cold most of the year round. Addition to
the diversities of ethnic groups and flora and fauna, some of Shan
localities are well-known for international travellers for years.
Among these destinations, Inlay lake would be best known.
| The second biggest of its kind in Myanmar, it is best known, of
up-hill lake, for leg-rowing style, floating islands, Paung-daw-Oo
Paya. On the other hand, impressive arts and handicrafts, viz,
silk-weaving, lotus-robe, pottery and silversmith so on, are also
interesting. Enjoying the different ethnic groups, Inn-tha, Shan,
Pa-O so on, market would be best at morning. |

| It is a small uphill town and famous for "Golden Caves"
but the town itself has some curious points, such as the
traditional paper production, ancient monasteries and
umbrella workshops. "The Golden Caves" is actually some
elevation above the town and accessed through the way under
the shady century old banyan trees. The main cave is fully
packed with a variety of Buddha-images, stupas, figures and
embellishments along its length datable not earlier than
16th century. Curiously, Indian style images and donors are
experienced in a reasonable number. The cool breeze and
panoramic view on the environs, including Ponetaloke lake at
a distance are of fantastic and incredible. |

| Once the residence of Shan Sawbwa, local chieftain, it is now a
major station and undergone with the popularity of Inlay lake
nearby. But, Sawbwa Museum, the ex. Haw of the regional Sawbwa, is a
visit worthwhile. It is of the building composed by the
architectural combination of Europe, Myanmar tradition and Shan
practice. |

| It is the capital of Shan state and of beautiful with clean
inter-roads, especially the bright cherry flowers are covering the
roads and the best place for leisure walk. Shan State Museum and Gem
market should be your visiting points. Don't forget, it is one of
the major business centres for China's products "Hot ballon
contest", a traditional Shan festival, is the most croweded public
fare and usually held in Tazaungdine (November) annually. |

| With the inscription of Sawadee magazine, it is becoming in a few
years and basically composed of about 2500 pagodas in the heart of
Pa-O territory, some 26 miles away from Taunggyi. On the way, one of
Pa.O villages and their life-styles could be appreciated.
Remarkably, most pagodas are comparatively small in size but
embellished with find stucco-carvings like Bagan. |

| Not known as Pyin-Oo Lwin, it is more beautiful and tranquil than
Pyin-Oo-Lwin then has reputated as "Pine City" encircled by sweet
smelling pine tree round. The small town on the plain among the blue
hills retains more natural and unspoiled environs. Local foods are
the best for breakfast. Pedestrians will lead to Shwe-Umin natural
cave on lime-stone bed and Mahamuni of Dry-lacqured Buddha. |

It is the major city of Eastern Shan State and border-town of
Myanmar-China, some 230 miles (456 kilos) away from Taunggyi.
Besides, Mahamyatmuni, Naungton lake, ancient monastery together
with pottery production, the commonest visiting points are those of
Thittabin hillock and the prettiest colourful model village of
lahu-akha people. But, there are also Shan, Palaung and other too,
in Kyaing-tong and environs.
